Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
