No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
