The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
